I know that everyone is always looking for a way to make pretty cookies - easily. Using royal icing gives you amazing results, but sometimes there isn't enough time to conquer cookies and children. So, I love to use an easier alternative that gives these adorable results.
First, you are going to want to use your favorite sugar cookie recipe. I love to use a recipe that gives me a cookie that will not lose its shape. You can find the recipe I use here. They taste like shortbread and are so yummy. Remember to always use unsalted butter. Trust me, I speak from experience. There is nothing worse than a salty sugar cookie. I roll my cookie dough out to 3/8" thick. (The trick is to use square wooden dowels to get the perfect thickness.) Once your dough is ready, pick your favorite cookie cutter. Now, stick those little cuties in the oven.
Once your cookies are baked to perfection, you need to decorate those little guys. My shortcut is.............................................(wait for it).........fondant. Fondant is now available at almost any grocery store. Just look down the baking or cake decorating aisle. Fondant gives a clean finish and tastes like marshmallows.
I wanted a little marble/swirl effect for these cookies. So, you just take white and blue and twist the two colors together. Don't overdo it. Keep those adorable swirls in the fondant when you roll it out.

Once you roll out the fondant, use the same cookie cutter you used for your cookies to cut out the fondant. The beautiful thing about this, is you now have a perfect match for your cookie. Paint the back of the fondant with a light coating of water. This small amount of water makes the fondant sticky. Now, just lay that sticky side on the c
ookie. TaDaaa!!!! It's a perfect fit. The finishing touch is the sprinkles. Who doesn't love sprinkles? They are like little dots of happiness you can put on anything. They are like your own personal rainbow of sugar. They are the best things ever. Ok, I need to get a grip!
To get those little sprinkles of happiness on your cookie, use a little more water. I just dipped my finger in a little water and traced over the edge of the fondant. The water and the fondant make a perfect little paste for the sprinkles. Once you have done your outline, just shake those sprinkles over the cookie. They will only stick to the part outlined with water. Sprinkle magic!!!

Here is the final product. You have a little marble magic with sweet sprinkles.
